Traditional Shutters
PART 1 GENERAL
1.01 Scope
The contractor shall furnish and install wooden shutters as shown on plan and herein specified as supplied by AMERICANA DEVENCO SHUTTERS, Dubuque, IA 52001.
1.02 Operation
Openings shall be fitted precisely for fully operable shutters, hinged within the opening. Louvers shall be spaced at 1” on center and shall close fully with overlap.
PART 2 PRODUCT
2.01 Material
Shutters shall be fabricated of the highest grade, kiln-dried, defect-free material. All wood shall be sound, stable, and suitable for safe use being free of open or loose knots or pitch pockets. Dowels shall be 3/8” diameter by 3” long spiraled birch or other suitable hard wood.
2.02 Construction
Shutter stiles and rails shall be of mortise and dowel joinery with 3” dowels in each joint and glued securely under pressure. Any panel exceeding 56” in height shall have a lock rail installed at center or specified location. Louvers shall rotate on nylon tenons bored and placed such that louvers remain balanced in position, eliminating the need for tension adjustment mechanisms. Inner stiles shall be rabbeted, outside stiles shall be mortised for hinges. Louvers shall have nylon spacer at each end providing friction-free movement within the stile. Yoke pins connecting the tilt control arm to louvers shall be coated, effectively being glued in position with wire gauge of #18. Yoke pins shall measure minimum of ¾” in louvers; 5/8” in tilt control arm and should be set in such a position so as to not strike or scar adjacent preceding louver with normal operation.
2.03 Structural Dimension
The finish thickness of the stiles shall be minimum 1”. The finish thickness of the rails shall be 3/4”. Louvers shall measure 5/16” thick by 1-1/4” wide, tapered in an elliptical design with full closure.
2.04 Millwork
Shutters shall be factory finished with a minimum of 4 coats of finish including, sealer, primer, undercoats, and final top coat. No open cracks or flaws of dings shall exist in the finished product. Paint color or stain color shall be matched precisely to that which is specified in contract and strike off same of match shall be provided on request prior to finishing.
PART 3 EXECUTION
3.01 Installation
Shutters shall be installed with hinges of 0.063 gauge suitable for weight of panels to allow full and safe operation with proper clearances at window stool and between panels.
Caribbean Shutters
