All wood is milled by us in our shop. There are no prefab or stock-sized parts. All work is done in our shop by skilled craftsmen to the highest standards in the industry today.
Following our state-of-the-art CAD drawings that are reviewed and approved by the customer for accuracy, the components for each shutter are cut by hand, piece by piece, the old-fashioned way. The shutters are then assembled by hand using old-world cabinetmaker construction techniques.
After assembly, each shutter is sanded and buffed by hand and prepared for finishing. All shutters are ready to receive a finish with either being provided raw or primed. Hardware is carefully set on each shutter and holes are drilled for installation. Your shutters are then packed like Waterford crystal for shipping.
For centuries Bermuda shutters have been used in the Caribbean for protection from the intense heat of the sun. You can also benefit from this uniquely designed shutter. According to legend, the push-out type of shutter was first used in Venice, Italy as protection from the sun. The design of this shutter is so effective that it is used universally for shelter from the sun’s rays.
Today, Bermuda shutters are found on cabanas, gazebos, and verandas as well as south facing windows. The unique design of the Bermuda shutter is quite effective in its function. While protecting from the direct rays of the sun, it also provides privacy from neighbors. These shutters allow cool breezes from outdoors and help to regulate light. Another purpose of Bermuda shutters is to protect your windows from tropical storms. This style of shutter is vital for decreasing the negative pressure created by high velocity winds moving over the roof which can potentially cause roof collapse during severe weather.
Bermuda shutters generally cover the entire window (including the casing) down to the sill. This allows you to close them to provide additional protection for your windows. They provide a relaxed, beachy aesthetic along with their functionality. Awning styled shutters can be between half to one-third of the window height. They shield the room from the sun while providing for a greater unobstructed viewing area.
The 2-1/2 inch louvers are set at a 50° pitch and spaced a full 2 inches apart. As the shutter is pushed out, the louvers become parallel with your line of vision while remaining perpendicular to the rays of the sun. The Bermuda shutter is extended to optimal position and held securely by black iron hooks. The angle of the shutter is determined by the placement of the iron hooks on the window jamb and can be provided in either 12” or 16” lengths. In inclement weather, the shutter may be released from the push-out hooks and pulled in.
When your Americana DeVenco shutters arrive, they are ready to finish and install with minimal assembly required. Installation instructions will be provided. Any handyman, carpenter, or DIY-enthusiast should be able to install them with ease.
